Time

February 10, 2017

Time is a strange thing. We can track time by different things, but most of us track it by a clock, an hour by hour timeline, but what if we didn’t? What if we tracked time by love or loss or happiness or events. Would we be less stressed, would we enjoy the time we have more, cherish it more? We are always checking our clocks, checking to see when our next meeting is or next affair, but while we are obsessed with the next event we are completely missing what is right in front us. We often in life always look forward to something, birthdays, holidays, vacations, graduations, marriage, having kids, we are always looking into the distance for the good that is too come, and while that can bring joy into our life, it could also be the reason we miss God’s little perfect moments. I know for me at least I am always looking forward to the day I get married always thinking about the who and when and where of it, but what I realized is that the right now  life is teaching me to love myself, and God is showing me his love for me is all I would ever need, the right now is bringing a different kind of love into my life but the same kind of fulfillment.

But it is human nature to keep going and to keep looking ahead, it takes time to stop and realize that the now could actually be more fulfilling than the future.  In the words of Ben Rector, ” Life is not about the mountains, it is about the walking in between.” So if we measure time not by minutes but by joy and by the little stuff maybe life would slow down, maybe we wouldn’t be so consumed with what is coming next, and we would feel completely at peace with what is happening now. If we lived life on this measurement I think it would be easier to realize that life is about what we DO with our hours, and WHO we spend them with.    Psalm 90:12 says:

“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”

God teaches us that the point of our days is to grow in wisdom, and kindness, and passion, and God, and love. The only way we can do this is to realize that we are not here forever, and time is limited, but we can grow and become who God made us to be if we use the time to be with Him and experience the moments he blesses us with and to take it all in. On this Thanksgiving, I will try to take in all the moments the small ones, the insignificant but totally important ones, the ones that will fill me with joy.

So. Let’s measure time in love or kindness and forget about hours or minutes and see what happens.

Happy Thanksgiving.
